How high the gulls fly
How sad the farm lad
deep in play
Felt like a grain on your sand
Islay is one of the larger islands just off the Scottish mainland. Today, it has over three thousand inhabitants and the main commercial activities are agriculture, malt whisky distillation and tourism. It would have greatly stood out to a late ‘60s folk musician and vagabond, and Donovan clearly found a sense of artistic rejuvenation from the simple pastoral scenes during his visit there.
