PARIS — The co-pilot of Germanwings flight 9525 deliberately crashed the aircraft, French officials said Thursday, pointing to voice recorder evidence that he had locked the captain out of the cockpit, ignored his pleas for re-entry and steered down into the French Alps as passengers were heard screaming.

One of the strangest things to observe in recent weeks has been the hold on what used to be called the popular imagination of Robert Durst’s final monologue in Andrew Jarecki’s documentary series, “The Jinx.” As nearly everyone knows by now, Durst, while on a “hot mic” in a bathroom, either did or did not, exactly, confess to the three or so murders of which he has long been suspected (and has denied and, in one case, been acquitted of having committed). His words, two parts Shakespeare to one part Samuel Beckett, seem likely to be burned onto our period’s memory: “There it is. You’re caught. You’re right, of course. But you can’t imagine. Arrest him. I don’t know what’s in the house. Oh, I want this. What a disaster. He was right. I was wrong. And the burping. I’m having difficulty with the question. What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”

My very conservative brother worked for them for a short time, because Koch Industries had bought their refinery. He said if the brothers were on fire, he would not pizz on them to put them out. They did everything imaginable to destroy employee morale and even wanted them to sign a document saying their job was the number one priority in their lives [not their family, their jobs]. He and the rest refused to do this, and knew his days would be numbered He was laid off but thanks to the skills he built BEFORE Koch bought the refinery, he was able to get another job before too long.

So my solution is to recognize the highest taxpayers. Take the 10 highest in a congressional district or whatever geographic designation you want and name a Post Office, or a bridge, or whatever after them. Have the congressman or whatever meet with them to thank them for their taxes. Hell, send the FBI or ATF or whatever. They seem to love law enforcement when it's there to kiss their ass.

Gray tries to wave off the battle death numbers by repeating the legend that during the 20th century the ratio of military to civilian deaths flipped from 9:1 to 1:9. In my book The Better Angels of Our Nature I noted that this meme originated in a counting error and has been debunked many times. Throughout history wars have displaced, and frequently have targeted, civilians. No one knows how the ratio has changed, but when battle deaths decline a thousandfold it hardly matters. A great-powe...
