We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this.

from President Barack Obama – Reaction to the Zimmerman Trial Verdict on Rap Genius

Meaning

This was a tragedy no matter how you look at it, but clearly another tragedy here would be to allow sensationalism and irrational voices to take further hold of societal decisions. The more rational questions we should be asking ourselves are:

  1. How common are these tragedies?
  2. What can society do to prevent them?
  3. To what extent can they be prevented and at what costs?

ETC…

Statistically speaking, you simply cannot look at one single event and get any sort of reasonable information from it.

Furthermore, we need to understand as a society that our usual short-term solutions are what cause most of our problems in the future. We’ve seen the effects of myopic vision with our war on drugs, the “quarterly capitalism”, climate change, fight against poverty, etc.

Trayvon Martin’s parents, in all their grace, were absolutely right when they said we all need to take a moment and reflect upon this event. From there, we need to come together as a whole to make the necessary changes.
