I saw a story on Outside The Lines one time, about Japanese HS pitchers and how they said one high schooler threw like 700 pitches in 4-5 days. The way they do it in Japan, I wonder how their arms don’t fall off with all the trouble pitchers seem to have nowadays.

It’s sad. Just shows that SOMETHING is wrong with pitching today. He was held to a relatively modest pitch count too, the Marlins were careful with him.

I’ve been hearing a lot lately that the suspected reason behind the recent Tommy John’s is because the pitchers are throwing off-speed pitches as kids. I was at a Phillies game last Wednesday and in between innings they had a

“Ask The Phillies” segment and they asked Cliff Lee what advice he’d give a young pitcher. Cliff said something along the lines of “don’t throw off-speed pitches until you’re older than 15” just some food for thought

@white_boy My thoughts exactly. No reason for kids under 15 to be throwing curveballs and other junk before their arms are fully developed. The focus is always on velocity and striking people out, which is wrong. Little Leaguers need to be throwing fastballs and changeups… people underestimate the value of a solid changepiece.

Another issue is kids PITCHING year round. Arms need rest, especially growing ones. You can play year round all you want, but you have to take care of your arm.
