Neymar really is a piece of work.

Was that close to posting this in the TV/Movie genius forum.

On his day, he’s arguable one of the Top 5 players in the game right now but the play acting really needs to go.

@ProEraNoError If we’re regarding raw talent alone, only Ronaldo and Messi and maybe Suarez are ahead of him.

I highly, highly rate Neymar Jr. and believe he’ll definitely become a consistently dangerous player.

Neymar’s having a more difficult time adjusting to European football than Gareth Bale and for obvious reasons. In the Brasilian league he would be offered a lot more time on the ball, he was the focal point for Santos and he could player across the front and move freely, also the general level of quality is less there, which isn’t to say it’s a poor league. He was the most fouled player in La Liga earlier in 2013/14 season and is clearly experiencing a harsh welcome to the league, also tactically and with regard to his discipline. I think his overall level of expectation is higher than that of Gareth Bale’s.

He is the biggest star in Brasil (not just biggest footballer, just YouTube the various TV shows and the concerts (also note the reaction he gets at 1m8s when he comes out to sing Michel Teló’s huge, huge hit – “Ai Se Eu Te Pego”) he features in – they even had a competition for who could be the best Neymar look-a-like!!).

So coming to Barcelona will only have amplified that, he’s also expected to reignite his Confederations Cup 2013 form, where he won the competition with Brasil and also won the Best Player/Golden Ball, in the World Cup 2014 and that’s a pressure Bale will never have, through no fault of his own.

That isn’t to say Bale has less pressure, Real Madrid paid huge money and he’ll be scrutinized just as heavily in Spain too. I also think Gareth Bale is a better athelete than Neymar, being physically more mature and of course better accustomed to dealing with European football. The Welshman, at 24 (25 in July), is also 2-3 years older than Neymar who turned 22 in February.

I don’t believe Neymar’s stats this season have been that bad either:

Player comparison | | | | |
— | — | — |
Player | Transfer fee | Goals | Assists | Price per goal | Price per assist
Neymar | €57 million | 15 | 11 | €3.8 million | €5.1 million
Gareth Bale | €100 million | 19 | 15 | €5.3 million | €6.7 million
— | — | — |
Per game stats: | Chances created | Pass accuracy | Key passes | Dribbles | Shot accuracy
Neymar | 55 | 85% | 1.5 | 3.5 | 56%
Gareth Bale | 44 | 78% | 1.2 | 2 | 76%

Ronaldinho went through the older PSG (not the nouveau riche of today) as his ticket into Europe and had time to adjust there before being under the microscope at Barcelona. Also, in England, Eden Hazard didn’t set the world alight during his first season at Chelsea, nor did Cesc Fàbregas upon his return home to Barcelona in 2011.

We’ll see a different Neymar and a different Gareth Bale during 2014/15.

If you read all of that, many thanks.
