At what point do we stop calling this a vehicle and start calling it a robot?

This is a concept popularized in spy novels and movies. But it really existed. The old CIA agents really collected lessons learned and discussed these informal collections of lessons.

In war, supply is critical. Churchill said it this way: “Victory is the beautiful, bright-colored flower. Transport is the stem without which it could never have blossomed.”

This section spells out who is in charge. There should be no ambiguity on this in any military operation.

"• Security – Capability of system to resist cyber attacks" (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – Preliminary Statement of Policy Concerning Automated Vehicles) | accepted

Current automated systems have already been demonstrated to be hackable. Cruise control, navigation systems, automated locks, automated ignitions. These are all very basic hacks, but the fact is that where there is a technology there is a hacker waiting to crack it.

He was, however, savvy enough to use the word “might” in his projection.

Fermi was one of the many distinguished emigres to America from Mussolini controlled Italy.

"As CEO, I am accountable." (Andrew Mason – Groupon Farewell Memo) | pending

We should take this as a “teachable moment” not just for CEOs but for any in a position of responsibility, including those in government. The usual analogies used in situations like this are of the Captain of a ship. No matter what happens on that ship, the Captain is responsible. Even if the Captain is not on the bridge he had better have trained the people who are on the bridge.

But this is a perfect time to make even bigger analogies to the ship of state. In our government there is one and only one chief executive. Our Constitution centers all executive authority on a President. Congress and the Courts also have authorities but one person, like the CEO of Groupon, must take responsibility for all that happens, good or bad.

I look at this situation and feel the failures of the Groupon CEO were bad and may have hurt some people and lost some jobs. But Andrew demonstrated tremendous leadership by accepting all responsibility. I believe this is the kind of leader we need in the corporate world and wish him luck. I also wish we had a chief executive like that in the White House right now.
