Lady Gaga took the stage at the 2010 Video Music Awards wearing meat from head to toe — around forty pounds of real meat! Gaga later said about the dress:

Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth. However, it has many interpretations but for me this evening. If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And, I am not a piece of meat.

The September 2013 email was in response to a customer named Bridget Todd, who tweeted at Uber that her driver choked her after she kissed her husband in the back of the vehicle because he didn’t approve of her interracial relationship.

Kalanick issued this public press release:

It is our understanding that an argument broke out between the driver utilizing Uber’s technology and one of his passengers – an argument that was provoked by the passenger. The police approached the scene and neither party elected to press charges. If legal action is taken, Uber remains committed to helping appropriate law enforcement agencies in any way possible.

On December 14th, 2013 Uber used heavy flurries and hail in Manhattan as justification for increasing prices by as much as 7 times the normal rate.

The Uber app issues a warning for surge pricing before it processes a request, but Uber customers still accused the company of price gouging. Three weeks later, an Uber spokesperson stated that demand during the storm (and during the surge pricing) had not gone down. Uber’s CEO wrote:

So, was it expensive. It was, and we wish it wasn’t necessary. But if you did indeed take the rides described then you confirmed the price which was very up front, and then entered the multiple you read into a text box in order to double confirm.

The listing committee of Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Ltd decided in September 2013 not to change its rules to allow Alibaba to list with a corporate structure that would give management unprecedented powers. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq permit these types of dual-class shareholding structures.

Alibaba is worth an estimated $80 billion and the loss of such a large company’s IPO listing is likely to prompt change Hong Kong’s financial market framework.

Ok, I get the point and like the general premise but…“guys like smart girls” gets about 93,100,000 results on Google. I know we ain’t aiming for scientific results here, but within these parameters we see about 50% more support against the author’s position.

Specifically, Schlafly wrote:

While women prefer to HAVE a higher-earning partner, men generally prefer to BE the higher-earning partner in a relationship. This simple but profound difference between the sexes has powerful consequences for the so-called pay gap.

Suppose the pay gap between men and women were magically eliminated. If that happened, simple arithmetic suggests that half of women would be unable to find what they regard as a suitable mate.

Obviously, I’m not saying women won’t date or marry a lower-earning men, only that they probably prefer not to. If a higher-earning man is not available, many women are more likely not to marry at all.

The New York Times reported in March 2014 that middle-aged business owners believe the new generation lacks a strong work ethic, is not motivated or dependable, doesn’t take initiative, and needs constant affirmation.

But Peter Cappelli, director of the Center for Human Resources at the Wharton School, argues that these results simply reflect “the way old people see young people. There’s no evidence millennials are different. They’re just younger. I remember very explicitly when I was graduating from college, this stereotype of Gen-Xers as slackers.”

I like the point-counterpoint here. Maybe include data on worker productivity and its consistent increase over the last few decades? It’s not a perfect measure of young workers' performance, but it does some to combat the stigma assigned to young workers.

  • Quotation mark before slackers?
  • Funny how things in “the old days” always seem to be better. Check out the RG forum sometime — you’ll find people who weren’t even alive at the time saying 90s rap was way better than today. Heck, ask people in their 20s if Capri Sun is better than whatever the whippersnappers these days have in their lunchbox.

Schoolboy Q and Kendrick both signed to Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) and were part of the group Black Hippy, along with Ab-Soul and Jay Rock.

Black Hippy was Schoolboy Q’s idea, in part because:

I was slacking in my music. I figured if I could be in a group I could just write one verse and I could be good.

Kendrick is also featured on Collard Greens, the lead single from Oxymoron.

oooooooooooooh GOOD CATCH

"I’m going to work to help get the Equal Rights Amendment ..." (Madison Kimrey – Open Letter to Phyllis Schlafly) | pending

when did it just barely miss being ratified???

snap!

NOOOOOOO read it on news genius!!

"The United States Government can take no action to stifle..." (President John F. Kennedy – Letter to Chairman Khrushchev) | accepted
  • there is a quotation before the spirit that never finishes! is that a quote? who said it? you also bring it up again (i think) in the last paragraph, so maybe pick which paragraph it best supports
  • what is operation mongoose? DEF relevant but maybe a sentence explaining why
"An alien-dominated regime" (President John F. Kennedy – Letter to Chairman Khrushchev) | accepted

this is good! all my things are nit-picky but the devil is in the details.
– just to shorten, could say “kennedy implies Castro…"
– the quote is great but 1. could we put it on news genius?? and 2. i feel there is a ”…“ over the most important part: WHO owned about 40% of cuban sugar fields?
– US instead of United States, i would get rid of "here” after stake
– oooooh the further reading add on is interesting. THAT would be an awesome expandable add-on (so when i click on a “read more” tab or button, a list of related books/articles show up). what do other ppl think of this? can i @news-genius-editors? probably not…

“Just last year, Secretary of State John Kerry referred to South America as Washington’s “backyard,” a move that angered the region and led Bolivian president Evo Morales to expel the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) from his country. The term is felt by some to be the South American equivalent to the “n-word.”

hmmm this is interesting but i think it’s tangent?? (maybe this is where we have the tl;dr and then other interesting stuff). but essentially, i’m on this page reading about bay of pigs, you could cite A LOT of other examples of the US going into south america, just not sure it’s 100% relevant in this particular annotation.

what if we posted helpful resources in text suggestions, like @nightpool did? seems like it would be helpful

"I ordered that a transition" (President Barack Obama – Statement on Section 215 Bulk Metadata Program) | accepted
  • my first comment is that this is so long! it’s almost a primary text by itself. and while a lot of the information contained is interesting, a shorter and more explicitly relevant annotation would benefit readers more

  • from the start, i’m not convinced it directly refers to the text you highlight. “obama ordered a transition”; you could start off with a sentence that more strongly ties your first paragraph to the text. “some disagreed that it represented a real transition…”

  • paragraph 2 contains info that is covered in a lot of other annotations, maybe that one can go? or be wrapped more succinctly into paragraph 1?

  • the cointelpro program is a great reference, but again, could be more explicitly tied to the text you’ve annotated. it feels forced as is

hopefully this all makes sense!

"Maintaining the tools our intelligence and law enforcemen..." (President Barack Obama – Statement on Section 215 Bulk Metadata Program) | accepted

this is interesting information, but why did you pick these two specific examples?

also to make sure this directly refers to the line of text you annotated, i’d include some information on how these programs will be affected by Obama’s proposed changes.
