Very true. Throughout his Presidency and in his personal life/work prior to his Presidency, Nixon was known for being extremely determined and focused. Along with his staunch determination, Nixon, ever since he was a child, was very insecure and felt the need to prove himself. The fact that he was being “forced” to quit under these circumstances must have truly devastated Nixon.

Here, the plaintiffs argue that even if the public schools had truly equal facilities (which they for the most part did not), the fact that they were separate made them unequal.

To quote Chief Justice Earl Warren,

“Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.”

The power to amend the Constitution is one of the Constitution’s most unique and important qualities. The founding fathers knew they did not have all the answers, and times, ideas, and needs of the country change over time. While the basic principles of the Constitution will (hopefully) remain forever intact, the founding fathers wanted the Constitution to be amended when necessary to ensure the document kept up with the times. That being said, they made it very, very hard to amend the Constitution.

“Every constitution, then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of nineteen years. If it be enforced longer, it is an act of force, and not of right.” – Thomas Jefferson

Very scary, indeed. The President of the United States has complete power to grant absolute pardons to ANYONE he chooses.

Exaggerated and Unlikely Example: A man kills Mitt Romney during the Presidential Debate, guaranteeing Obama’s victory. Barack Obama as President can grant an absolute pardon to the man who killed Mitt Romney, and the murderer MUST be released from custody and cannot be tried for that crime.

However, before we get too ahead of ourselves, it is important to realize that this pardon power can be very helpful to the country at times. For instance, when Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon after his impeachment, he refocused the efforts of the nation on the important social and economic issues, rather than Nixon’s scandal which would have consumed Ford’s presidency and allowed him to get nothing done.

All U.S. Presidents have taken this Oath of Office to be sworn in to the Presidency. The addition of “so help me God” to the end of the oath was a precedent established by George Washington, but is not actually part of the Constitutional Oath of Office.
