You can see how some people might be a bit reluctant to accept the metaphor. Slavery and petty monetary issues are not exactly equivalent.

It is a bit of a stretch.

Unfortunately, these reasons are not the most likely to be inciting attacks against the US. If you ask an active follower of American foreign policy, like Congressman Ron Paul, you will likely get a much different and more truthful answer.

Truthfully, the reason America is attacked and hated is not because of America’s way of life or ideas, but rather America’s harsh foreign policy has angered much of the Middle East.

For example, in 1953, the U.S. Government overthrew the democratically elected Iranian government and installed a Shah (king) as an authoritarian leader, to protect oil interests.

To quote Congressman Paul,

We need to look at what we do from the perspective of what would happen if somebody else did it to us.

We now know that 9/11 lead to wars, thousands of dead U.S. troops, thousands of dead troops of other countries, and an enormous number of civilian deaths.

There is quite a debate of whether or not George W. Bush was justified in some of his actions, but it is clear that this was a very difficult time for America, and citizens wanted justice for those responsible for the attacks.

Now, knowing what we know now, we have the ability to look back objectively and ask if we truly brought enemies to justice. Osama Bin Laden is dead; at least one hundred thousand innocent civilians were killed as a result of these wars. Does this constitute justice?

Kanye’s sixth studio album was very well received by critics for its lyrical content, exploration of new and innovative sounds, and exploitation of current social injustice and other issues.

This album is very different from Kanye’s previous discography, and unlike anything people have ever heard before, which could be a reason why it received mostly mixed reviews from the public.

Charles Aaron from Spin Magazine reflects on the album’s use of experimental sound:

Yeezus is a hip hop album, not a rap album…hip-hop has always been about noise and dissonance and dance music as agitation

Nonetheless, Yeezus sold 327,000 copies in the first week, and continues to do very well in terms of sales.

Here, we must remember artists have always used the shock appeal to attract attention to their cause. A very fitting example would be Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit (this song was also sampled in Kanye’s Blood on the Leaves. Billie Holiday’s goal when performing the song was to shock people and encourage reflection on the issues of racism.

The same thing is being done here by artists like Kanye West, J. Cole, Killer Mike, etc. Shocking and appalling people by creating controversy is perhaps the best way to get their attention.

(When Billie Holiday performed Strange Fruit in clubs, the lights dimmed, service stopped, and not one person was not completely focused on the message of the song. As an interesting side note, Kanye West, when performing “New Slaves” live on SNL, perhaps as an ode to Billie Holiday, dimmed the lights at the end of the performance.

Here, we see paramedics arriving and attending to the shaken up victim. Hours later, there is still no update on the condition of the victim, but looking at the video, photo evidence, and what information we do have from the authorities, it is likely that he is just a bit shaken up and not horribly injured. Nonetheless, it is too soon to say for sure.

First, let’s tackle car insurance.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, in 2007, the average cost of car insurance was $795. However, car insurance costs highly depend on the state you live in, so if you live somewhere like Florida, car insurance averages exceed $1,000.

Now, on to home insurance.

First of all I should point out that if you are working at McDonald’s as your primary source of income, it is very unlikely that you own a home.

Assuming 90% of the people using this budget journal guide do not own a home, we can forget about home insurance. (Renters insurance is very cheap, so we can pretty much forget about that as well.)

But for those people who do own a home, let’s break it down.

Yet again according to the NAIC, in 2007, the average cost for home insurance was $822. Yet again, location, location, location. If, god forbid, you live in Florida, you can expect an average home insurance cost of over $1,500 dollars.

Ok, so all of these numbers are great, but let’s put them into context. According to this budget, $100 per month is allotted for car insurance and home insurance.

Assuming you only have car insurance to worry about, this one is actually feasible. Assuming your car insurance costs $795 per year (the national average), that comes down to $66 per month. Fantastic!!

Unfortunately, it’s downhill from here. If you do have a home and purchase homeowners insurance, assuming the average of $822 ($68.5 monthly), and adding that monthly average to the car insurance does go over the $100 allotment.

Truthfully, this is one of the more feasible allotments in this budget, but is by no means a conservative estimate.

Assuming you work at McDonalds for 5 years, and assuming:

  • You keep your job
  • You keep your second job
  • Your rent and other expenses are extremely low
  • You live by yourself
  • No accidents/unexpected situations occur!!!!
  • etc.

This leaves you with $6,000 in savings. Sounds great right? Not really. $6,000 per 5 years will definitely cover retirement costs, school costs, college savings, etc. Not to mention unforeseen expenses which are bound to happen at times.

It’s one thing to provide people information and tips regarding money management, but a recurring theme of this “sample budget” is that nearly everything is unrealistic.
