In June, NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed classified information detailing the US’s top-secret surveillance programs. While it would be ideal for such programs to be open for public debate, the legal structure surround the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) and its rulings practically prevent this. The classified nature of the court’s rulings means that exposing them to the public for debate is inherently in violation of the rulings themselves.

After David Miranda, the partner of The Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald, was detained for over nine hours while connecting through Heathrow Airport, the UN Special Rapporteur for freedom of opinion and UN Special Rapporteur on counter-terrorism wrote a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron voicing their criticism of the UK government’s attempts at intimidation of free press.

Despite a statute disallowing the US military from providing benefits to same-sex partners, Attorney General Eric Holder and the Obama administration argue that the repeal of DOMA makes the statute unconstitutional. The Department of Veteran’s Affairs, however, is bound by the Congressional definition of “spouse” which has not been changed to include same-sex couples and is therefore unable to offer equal benefits to gay and lesbian veterans.

NSA leaker Edward Snowden released what the Washington Post is calling “The Black Budget,” previously redacted pieces of the 2013 Congressional Budget Justification (CBJ) that outlines the quantity and allocation of funds for covert intelligence gathering.
