After joining the US Army in 2007 to pay for college, Bradley Manning was deployed to Iraq in October of 2009. Though he was originally discharged form the army six weeks after he enlisted due to supposed mental instability, his discharge was overturned due to his valuable IT skills and the military’s lack of intelligence analysts. By December of 2009, sources say he was passing classified information to WikiLeaks, which included videos of the Baghdad airstrike, Afghan and Iraq war logs, and thousands of incriminating diplomatic cables.

Daniel Ellsberg was working as a military analyst at the RAND Corporation when he began attending anti-war events in 1969, during the height of US involvement in Vietnam. Inspired by a speech given by draft resister Randy Kehler, Ellsberg began copying several classified papers to which he had access. The documents, which became known as the Pentagon Papers, revealed that contrary to what the Johnson administration had told both the American public and Congress, it had intentionally expanded the war by invading North Vietnam and bombing Laos and Cambodia. The release of the Pentagon Papers led to growing protests and contributed to the end of US involvement in Vietnam.

Ellsberg came out in support of Snowden’s release of the NSA documents.

On June 4, the UN issued a report stating that it was currently unclear as to which party was responsible for sarin usage.

Furthermore, both Russia and China have denounced U.S. reports, as Russian Foreign Policy advisor Yuri Ushakov said,

But I will say frankly that what was presented to us by the Americans does not look convincing. It would be hard even to call them facts.

Of course, Russia is one of the last allies to the Assad regime, but it’s still unnerving to think the U.S. would step up military support in opposition to our biggest trade ally and another powerful nation with which our ties are already strained.
