Following the Supreme Court ruling on June 25, 2013 that found Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act to be unconstitutional, Attorney General Greg Abbott wasted no time in announcing that Texas' voter ID law would become effective immediately, given that it no longer had to be approved by the Department of Justice.

The Supreme Court Ruling in Shelby County, Alabama v. The United States essentially struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act of 1964, which mandated that states attempting to institute voter ID laws prove that such laws were not racially discriminatory.
