The morgue, derived from the French word “mort” meaning death, is a place where dead bodies are stored. Here, it is metaphorically used to describe a gloomy place. This line is pretty ironic — death is usually associated with darkness so the shadow shouldn’t exist, as there is no light.
This also implies that she’s the light of his life, a light that glows in the darkness as she is by his side while he suffers through depression. This situation is comparable to witnessing a loved one suffer through depression, hence being dead inside. This helps the listener understand that the girl was also suffering because of his depression.
The presence of a shadow in a place teeming with death also offers an interesting piece of juxtaposition. The girl is living and the bodies around her are dead, reflecting how Mark’s life is “dead” and she is breathing a bit of life back into him.
