As if the sport would really be worse off with a bunch of 6'5, 250 lbs guys made of muscle because they like to have fun when they play. This mentality is why kids choose other sports over baseball.

  • Today’s players (particularly Jose Bautista and Bryce Harper) have embraced a more outwardly passionate playing style. Players of yesteryear (like Goose Gossage) have taken offense because they don’t think that’s how the game should be played. MLB’s in a tight spot: the unwritten rules are “sacred,” but are they limiting baseball’s marketability?

Hall of Fame pitcher Goose Gossage has been incredibly vocal about his disdain for “showy” antics in modern baseball, like celebratory bat flips and chirping at other players. There’s a divisive line between baseball traditionalists who feel the game should be played as modestly as possible, and modernists who see nothing wrong with celebrating and having a personality on the field.

Should baseball embrace the showmanship we see in today’s NFL and NBA? This is a crucial moment for a game that’s struggling to keep up viewership-wise.
