He’s referring to the Open Step operating system and much of the networking capacity that was developed at Next. When Steve started building Next he remembered the networking capacity that he had seen at PARC when he struck the deal to “look behind the kimono”. When he first went to xerox, he and his team were so awestruck by the GUI and the Mouse that they overlooked the networking capabilities. He didn’t forget it the second time around.

The board of Apple was questioning the viability of the personal computer. IBM had launched PC Junior to compete with the Mac and the PC Junior (an inferior product) was tanking. So IBM in an effort to sink the Mac basically liquidated the PC Junior causing the market for personal computers to fall out. This fell on the heals of Steve taking an add out in the wall street journal taunting IBM.

Sculley and the board saw Steve as a liability and wanted to demote him to a figure head status. Steve refused.
