The Con

Tegan and Sara

About “The Con”

Released in July 2007, The Con is Tegan and Sara’s fifth studio album.

The album went gold in Canada, reaching number 4 on Billboard for Canadian albums. It charted at number at number 34 in the Billboard 200.

The album’s two singles “Back in Your Head” and “The Con” both were released with music videos.

The Con is marked with a dark thematic shift compared to previous albums. Tegan’s songs primarily reflect on the end of a five-year relationship she was in. Both Tegan and Sara were also dealing with the death of their grandmother. The twins' mother had them when she was a teenager and she raised them by herself, so their grandmother figured prominently in their upbringing.

The Canadian duo recorded the album in Portland, OR. It was produced by Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie fame. The album features:
- Jason McGerr (also of Death Cab for Cutie) on drums and percussion
- Matt Sharp (founding member of Weezer playing bass on all of Sara’s songs (tracks 1, 2, 6, 9, 11, and 12)
- Hunter Burgan of AFI playing bass on all of Tegan’s songs (tracks 3, 7, 8, 10, 13, and 14)
- Kaki King on lap steel and guitar on two of Sara’s songs—“Knife Going In” and “Floorplan”
