R9 is Rihanna’s upcoming ninth studio album and is the follow-up to January 2016’s ANTI.
The album may be a double-disc release, as she revealed she was working on two albums, one being “full of chart-friendly songs” and the other being “made up of moody and experimental tracks.”
On December 21st, 2018, Rihanna revealed the album would be released in 2019, before failing to meet the date:
On March 30, 2020, Rihanna spoke about creating new music with British Vogue, saying:
I feel like I have no boundaries. I’ve done everything – I’ve done all the hits, I’ve tried every genre – now I’m just, I’m wide open. I can make anything that I want.
On May 20, 2019, Rihanna confirmed the album will be a reggae album. On July 30, 2020, Rihanna tells Access Online that the album is coming “sooner than fans think,” yet did not disclose a specific time because of fan pressure she encountered during the record of ANTI. She also tells ETNow that the wait will be “worth it.”
