Review of Chance The Rapper’s “Good Ass Intro” Lyrics

Well, it has been a while. Writing has been on the back burner as uni has got more and more intense. It took something special to get me back on here. Believe me, this track is something special.

Chance The Rapper. I’m going to be honest, I’d never heard of the guy before this Acid Rap tape dropped. I wish I had now to be honest. I don’t know if I’m jaded or not, I still love rap, but (in the least hipster/annoying (difference is semantics) way) most modern rap does nothing for me. Kendrick is amazing, obviously. Kanye is still killing everything. Chamillionaire, of course. But most, I dunno, just don’t appeal to me. I know people would be like “but Thom, you’re crazy - xxx is the greatest rapper alive!” I’ve got no problems with that, I’m open to hearing new things. This mixtape was new when I grabbed it, and it’s made me think I should check out new guys more often.

I’m focusing on an intro. That’s crazy. I would happily pay for this intro. It’s genuinely one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. The beat. The beat. The beat is absolutely crazy. I love it when there’s something different from the stereotypical modern rap beat, this is something…beautiful. I could do a review on the beat, but I’m not as knowledgeable on instruments as I’d like to be, so I’ll leave it here. That said, it is a joy to listen to.

Chance himself. Right. I’ve listened to the whole tape numerous times now. The best thing I’ve heard this year, definitely. Every track is different, but there is a consistency in his performance. Tracks like Favourite Song, Cocoa Butter Kisses and Everything’s Good (Good Ass Outro) are all viable contenders for track of the year. But the intro. Something special man.

A barrage of topics are fired in the first verse - acid, family and lab partners, but it’s the final bars that I love:

Mr. Bennett, you done did it, you did it, you did it
You did a good ass job, you did a good ass job

It just goes with the theme of victory that this song conveys, the good ass part of the title isn’t just a reference to the quality of the song, but the themes - it’s not a song about mean mugging and the like (shout out Xzibit still) but it’s a positive look - how putting in work can really pay off in life. Look at where Chancellor The Rapper is now. I could give you all the lyrics here, but this review (along with the others on here) will be on Rap Genius soon, so I’ll go into more detail about the lyrics by annotating it there. The thing is, you really have to listen to yourself. It’s as close to perfect as any song I know. I’m fully aware that almost makes this review redundant, but y’know, I had to get the word out somehow.

Also, I know that all of my reviews have been positive. That’s because I write about things I’m inspired by. If I had a paid job, I’d have no problem being critical, but as this is just for me, I have no reason to make myself suffer. That said, this is the only review I’ve done this year, and it’s got me in the mood for more. Please go grab Chance’s Acid Rap. You won’t regret it. Tell him I sent you, if you get at him on Twitter. If you do, send him a link to this, so he can see I appreciate the quality of his free mixtapes. Album quality, definitely. Mad. Thank you.
