Genius Annotation

“Pon De Floor” is a 2009 dancehall song by Major Lazer featuring reggae artist Vybz Kartel from the group’s debut album Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do. The track was produced by Major Lazer and Afrojack and is instantly identifiable by its snare-heavy marching band rhythm and bold synth riffs throughout. Its music video features dancers performing extreme Jamaican dances like “daggering” against a phantasmic, colorful background that shifts perspective throughout the clip.

After experiencing its own success through 2010, the song gained a second life when it was extensively sampled into “Run The World (Girls),” the lead single from Beyonce’s 2011 album 4.
