About

Genius Annotation

Perhaps one of the most controversial Dancehall songs ever made, Buju Banton’s ‘Boom Bye Bye’ is a derogatory hit directed at paedophiles – however, the song conflates them with homosexuals and features strong homophobic undertones as a result. The song repeatedly states that ‘batty boys’, a slur for homosexuals, should be killed:

It’s like boom bye bye inna batty bwoy head
Rude bwoy nah promote no nasty man, dem haffi dead

The song is specifically about a paedophile raping a young boy, one such incident was a controversial case at the time in Jamaica. However, in many countries prone to homophobia such as Jamaica, conflating “homosexuality” with “paedophilia” is common.

The homophobic undertones of the song are not unique in Jamaica or Dancehall. Jamaica has had a long history of treating homosexuals poorly, a trend that was reflected in Dancehall music at the time.

After strong campaigning from LGBT+ rights groups, Buju Banton agreed to stop performing the song post 2007. He soon after stated he never signed such an agreement, and repeatedly performed it after-the-fact. In March 2019, Buju agreed to remove the song from all platforms.

Why was the song removed from streaming services and YouTube?
Genius Answer

In March 2019, a few months after Buju Banton was released from prison, “Boom Bye Bye” was removed completely from streaming services and YouTube. This was done by Buju Banton himself:

In recent days there has been a great deal of press coverage about the song “Boom Bye Bye” from my past which I long ago stopped performing and removed from any platform that I control or have influence over

I recognize that the song has caused much pain to listeners, as well as to my fans, my family and myself. After all the adversity we’ve been through I am determined to put this song in the past and continue moving forward as an artist and as a man. I affirm once and for all that everyone has the right to live as they so choose. In the words of the great Dennis Brown, ‘Love and hate can never be friends.’ I welcome everyone to my shows in a spirit of peace and love. Please come join me in that same spirit.

The full song can still be found on Daily Motion, and remixes of the song are untouched.

How can you have a song on your website that promotes killing the LGBT?
Genius Answer

Genius.com is a database of all songs. A collection of knowledge. Unfortunately on such a site, there is bound to be controversial content.

However, it is important to keep in mind that knowledge is not the same as promoting. You can’t learn from history by shrugging it under the rug.

Instead we can use this page to discuss the homophobia within, why it was written, the effects it had – and use it as an opportunity to learn.
