Number two, open up more trade, particularly in Latin America
Romney plans to radically expand so-called “free trade” with Latin America, which began with 1994’s Clinton-signed NAFTA.
Such a trade deal is highly unpopular with many citizens both in the US and Latin America, but is favored by corporations who aim to move factories from the higher-wage and sometimes unionized United States to where labor is cheap in the Global South.
An initial attempt to institute Romney’s plan—2003’s Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)—was met with tremendous protest, following similar protests against free-trade talks in Seattle and Genoa.
