Heyday at Flickr
Caterina Fake is widely regarded as a community-building genius — when Flickr launched they were one of a zillion photo sites, but were able to rise to greatness through creating an extremely passionate community. The Flickr founders did this through tireless and manual work — making each new user to the site feel special and welcome.
From a 2006 Interview: “The most difficult part is not the technology but actually getting the people to behave well. When first starting the community the Flickr team were spending nearly 24 hours online greeting each individual user, introducing them to each other and cultivating the community.
